If you want to live in the city, the compromise for having great transport links, restaurants and cultural attractions on your doorstep is often space.

The size of the average family home has shrunk by 22 sq ft over the past decade and only half of Londoners now consider their homes big enough to entertain visitors, says a report released by furniture website MADE.com.

It's therefore not surprising that the word 'extension' features in the top 40 UK search terms on global home design website Houzz, along with 'small bathrooms' and 'small kitchens'.

In its latest Houzz & Home report, it revealed that almost a quarter of Brits were likely to extend their homes - double the proportion of Americans.

Last year, kitchen extensions made up 12 per cent of all renovations for UK home owners using the site, while six per cent invested in increasing living room space and four per cent built into the loft.
