Milkybar factory conversion in west London: legendary complex is being turned into new neighbourhood of 1,300 homes near Crossrail in Hayes

The Nestlé's Milkybar factory in Hayes, west London, is being reborn as a new 1,386-home neighbourhood moments from a Crossrail station that's due to open next year.

The sprawling 30-acre complex alongside Grand Union Canal closed in 2015 after its production of freeze-dried instant coffee switched to a plant in Derbyshire.

The factory's Art Deco façades and impressive entrance are being retained, and original fixtures such as staircases, machinery and artefacts will be incorporated into the design of new midcentury modern-style apartment blocks.

Before Nestlé acquired the site in 1929, the factory was owned by Eugen Sandow, the strongman who featured in several Charlie Chaplin films.

In 1913, after retiring from Hollywood, he invested his fortune establishing Sandow Cocoa Works, claiming cocoa gave him a training edge.

The factory later became the first place outside Switzerland to manufacture Nestlé's Milkybar, with the Milkybar Kid as the "face" of the product.

During its Fifties heyday, more than 2,000 people worked at the factory, which became something of a local legend. Hillingdon planners are keen to reinvent it as a new community.

More than seven acres of green public space and a trim trail are being created, the canal towpath will be upgraded and new workspace for small businesses will be introduced.

The prosaic new name chosen by developer Barratt, Hayes Village, does little to enhance the site's wonderful manufacturing heritage but Milkybar fans will be licking their lips.
