Tyburnia, the “lost” neighbourhood in Marble Arch named after the river that ran through it, was a place of public execution for almost 600 years until the last hanging there, of a highwayman, in 1783.

In the 1850s, Tyburnia rivalled Belgravia as a place to live. Sandwiched between Bayswater and Marylebone, the district includes the Connaught Square conservation area where Tony Blair lives, and Portman Village, a small enclave being given a makeover by the Portman Estate.

From here it is a quick stroll into Mayfair, or across the park to Knightsbridge. The tall stucco townhouses at 5 Connaught Place, above, had principal rooms overlooking Hyde Park and a private access road behind. Seven lavish flats are being launched behind the classical façade. Inside, ornate plasterwork is mixed with über-luxe modern finishes and there’s an internal courtyard and terrace.

A 6,000sq ft home is the highlight, spread across two floors and with private cinema and spa. Concierge services are provided by nearby Harrods. Prices from £13.25 million. Call 020 3489 0559.
