Central Park Tower in New York officially became the tallest residential building in the world this week as it reached its final height of 1,550ft (470 metres).

The skyscraper will be home to 179 ultra-luxurious apartments, many boasting uninterrupted views across the Manhattan skyline and Central Park.

When completed, this 131-storey vertical neighbourhood will feature what has been dubbed “the world's most exclusive club”, with a 60ft outdoor pool, bar, sundecks and spa complex for its super-rich residents.

Midtown Manhattan is filled with iconic buildings: the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station and the Rockefeller Plaza all cluster within the 25 prime streets heading south from Central Park.

Central Park Tower is the latest of several super-luxe towers along 57th Street, Manhattan’s so-called Billionaires Row, attracting interest from international high-rolling property buyers.

Homes currently for sale range from a two-bedroom flat on the 33rd floor priced at £5,525,000, to a 7,000sq ft, five-bedroom apartment on the 112th floor priced at an eye-watering £50.44 million.

The tower is the work of Extell Development Company, and Extell founder and chairman Gary Barnett celebrated its “topping out” milestone this week by dropping a curtain to reveal panoramic views from the living room of a breathtaking apartment on the 107th floor.

"Central Park Tower is the pinnacle of development in New York and around the world," said Barnett. "We would not be able to offer this level of design, quality and service without the contributions from the world's most talented architects, engineers and designers.

Designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, the cantilevered skyscraper has been constructed to withstand the high wind pressures faced by tall buildings in the densely packed Manhattan area. The light-reflecting facade features combined elements of glass and satin-finished stainless steel.

The tower cantilevers to the east, creating Central Park views for all north-facing residences. Plush interiors are designed by Rottet Studio, whose projects include the St. Regis Hotel in Aspen and the Loews Regency Hotel in New York.

Dubai's Burj Khalifa, which has homes, offices and retail space, is the world’s tallest tower at 2,716ft. However, Central Park Tower is now the tallest building of residential units and eclipses 432 Park Avenue, a 96-storey tower of sky-high homes designed by Rafael Viñoly, the architect of the 38-storey "Walkie Talkie" building – 20 Fenchurch Street, in the City of London.

Central Park Tower is due for completion in 2020. For more information, visit CentralParkTower.com.
