The humble cactus is the unlikely green star of the season.

Its cartoon-like shape and unfriendly prickles are popping up in smart interiors all over town.

The cactus motif is riding on the back of the capital's hot craze for all things tropical and has now found its way onto wallpaper, cushions, china and more.

Endorsing the trend, Paul Smith has a huge multi-coloured cactus coat stand in his store on Albemarle Street, W1, and has added tiny cacti motifs to ties and socks.

The Conran Shop (conranshop.co.uk) is full of brightly-coloured furnishings to celebrate a tropical summer, including this hand-embroidered cushion covers with sequins.

While London designer Charlotte Kingsnorth makes each 'cactus-like chairs' individually, sculpting upholstery onto an old frame, and hand-stitching each piece. Visit charlottekingsnorth.com.
