Kitchen trends 2018: millennial pink shades and 'unicorn-inspired' design among key trends heading into our homes this year

From dusky pink paints to patchwork wall tiles, B&Q and Pinterest's 2018 kitchen trends report reveals the key looks to watch out for this year...

During 2017, blush pink shades strutted down the catwalk and took over our instagram feeds in a big way.

In the past year, we've seen supermodel Kendall Jenner paint her living room a bold baker-pink; Soho House’s five-star Ned hotel opened in the heart of London’s City quarter with achingly cool pink brocade sofas and marbled walls; while iconic French brand Le Creuset released a limited edition bold, Berry shade for cookware.

From Millennial pink to rose quartz and Scandi pink to peachy pastels, these sweet pinky hues look set to move into our homes - and specifically our kitchens - in 2018.

According to a new report by B&Q and scrapbooking website Pinterest, buyers are being inspired by pastel shades, bright whites and gold accents when decorating and furnishing their kitchens.

Searches for ‘pink kitchen accessories’ on Pinterest leaped 234 per cent from July to October 2017, compared to the same period in 2016; all part of a glitzy, fashionable trend the report calls Unicorn-inspired design, after the fantasy creature sashayed onto home accessories in a big way last year.

“Brits are embracing the theme and turning to glitter paint, gloss tiling and accessories like coloured glass tea lights to add extra sparkle,” says Mike Lavers, Market Manager for Kitchens at B&Q.

But you don't have to go all-out mythical to channel the trend, subtle accents and furnishings can be as stylish as a marble-effect wallpaper or dusky pink feature wall.

And if you're not quite ready for pink-and-white 'unicorn-inspired' design, here are other key looks for 2018 you need to know about:

1. Metallics

Embrace metallics with warming golds, rose golds and bronzes. From reflective wall tiles to chic statement lighting and accessories, you can dip into the ultra-modern trend as much or as little as your space and budget allow. Pinterest saw an increase of 235 per cent in searches for ‘gold kitchen accessories’ towards the end of last year, so standby for more metallic accents in kitchens in 2018 too.

2. Touches of Morocco

Mosaic wallpapers, patchwork tiles and lantern lighting are all part of the Touches of Morocco trend, with Pinterest recording a 125 per cent increase in searches for Moroccan-inspired décor.

3. Getting back to nature

The natural look is proving ever popular, with searches for organic materials rising 139 per cent in recent months. It seems Britain isn’t just colour conscious when it comes to interior design, with ‘eco kitchens’ searches increasing by 164 per cent, too.
