Lottery couple who won £161m set to divorce

The winners of the biggest lottery jackpot in UK history, have announced their plans to “divorce amicably”.

Christine and Colin Weir, who scooped the £161 million EuroMillions prize in 2011, have been married for more than 30 years, but said they had been “living apart for some time”.

The couple from Largs, Ayshire, issued a statement to The Scottish Sun, saying: ‘It is with deep regret that Chris and Colin confirm they have been living apart for some time and intend to divorce amicably.

“There will be no further comment.”

Mrs Weir, 62, a psychiatric nurse and Mr Weir, 71, a former TV cameraman and studio manager, were catapulted onto the Sunday Times Rich List after their win.

The pair, who have two grown-up children, began their life as multimillionaires by clearing their debts and splashing out on a trip to Spain, a mansion and a fleet of cars.

In 2013 they set up The Weir Charitable Trust, which support Scottish charities and local community groups.

These include the Partick Thistle Football Club, which received a substantial investment from the couple. In recognition of their generosity, the club named a section of its Firhill Stadium the Colin Weir Stand.
