Former Primrose Hill home of Tim Burton up for rent for £65k per month

The house is available for sale or rent and has a flexible layout suited to working from home

The former London home of film director Tim Burton is available to rent for £65,000 per month. It’s also up for sale for £20 million.

Burton himself rented the striking glass-bricked modern house for several years from 2016, when its mammoth six-year build was completed.

Hidden away in a gated mews in Primrose Hill, Eglon House is formed of two buildings sitting opposite each other across a garden courtyard and joined at basement level by a swimming pool that turns into a cinema with a mechanical floor and waterproof screen. There’s also a gym with purpose-designed cocktail bar

Known for his gothic-tinged films including Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice and Sleepy Hollow, Burton used the east wing as a creative studio where wrote and produced the 2019 film Dumbo for Disney. Executives and staff working on the film lived in the west wing during production.

Burton met actor Helena Bonham Carter on the set of his 2001 film Planet of the Apes and they were together for 13 years, famously living in two separate adjoining houses near Eglon House in north London with their two children.

The five-bedroom house has floor-to-ceiling windows or glass bricks in every room and was inspired by Pierre Chareau’s Maison de Verre in Paris.

It is on the site of stables and barns that were used during World War I to manufacture shell casings and then as a dairy producing milk from the cows that grazed on Primrose Hill until the Fifties.

In the Seventies the dairy was converted into Mayfair Recording Studios where David Bowie, The Clash, The Smiths, Tina Turner and Oasis all recorded hits.

Mark Pollack, co-founding director at Aston Chase, who is marketing the house, said: “Secreted away at the foot of a peaceful mews, located in the very heart of Primrose Hill, the property is ideal for the growing number of super-prime buyers who favour maintaining a low profile in preference to the visibility afforded by some of London’s more obvious destinations for substantial homes.

“The property comprises of 13,000sq ft of accommodation split over two interlinked wings and in doing so provides remarkable versatility enabling either living and work spaces so that the property can be utilised as either a large private house, a home and office or living quarters in conjunction with a creative studio.”
