Superhero movie Black Panther is taking the global cinema audience by storm.

Starring Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman and Daniel Kaluuya, it is breaking box office records in America and much of its success has been attributed to the incredible set design.

Despite the location being a fictional African country, the movie’s designer Hannah Beachler says the film’s “Afrofuturist” architecture is a blend of the late starchitect Dame Zaha Hadid’s landmark designs — and Buckingham Palace. Who knew?

Beachler modelled Black Panther’s home on the royal residence and used it to determine the scale of the rest of the city. In an interview with architecture and design magazine Dezeen, she says Buck House is the “perfect size for a palace”.

Meanwhile, Hadid’s signature curved walls and plaster, metal or wooden materials inspired the shapes that we see on the screen.
