The imaginative redevelopment of a listed, recently derelict Victorian infirmary in Bow, St Clements is handy for both Canary Wharf and the City.

Originally a workhouse run by the Board of Guardians of the City of London union, the walled estate was palatial and advanced when built in 1874, having central heating, marble pillars, a chapel with an organ and a 100ft-long dining hall.

The impressive frontage in Mile End Road remains, along with original workshops and a lodge, now all part of a 252-home enclave with a mix of new-build flats and conversion properties for private sale, shared ownership and rent.

It is also part of London’s first Community Land Project, which links the cost of 23 of the homes to the area’s average median wage, making them genuinely affordable.

Even the clocktower has been split into 39 flats. Prices start at £489,995. Call Cushman & Wakefield on 020 3296 2222.

The site backs on to Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, now a nature reserve, and the Central line Tube is close by.
