Jose Mourinho has questioned the reliability of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after Tottenham were denied victory against Manchester United in a 1-1 draw on Friday night.

In their first Premier League match in over three months due to the coronavirus pandemic, Spurs took the lead through Steven Bergwijn's 27th-minute strike.

But the hosts were forced to settle for a point late on when substitute Paul Pogba was adjudged to have been fouled inside the penalty area by Eric Dier and Bruno Fernandes converted from the spot.

United were awarded another penalty in the 90th minute, with Dier again penalised for a foul, but VAR overturned referee Jonathan Moss' decision.

Mourinho was left incensed by the use of the video review system after watching his side denied three crucial points in the race for Champions League qualification.

"I'm not happy with the [first] penalty and I'm not also happy with the second penalty," he told Sky Sports after the game.

"I'm unhappy with the VAR, not with the referee. The referee, in the game, can make a mistake, can give penalties. But VAR is there to do the job. I'm not unhappy with Moss, I'm unhappy with VAR.

"The second penalty, I'm unhappy with both. Moss because he didn't give the free-kick on Serge Aurier, he let it go, and then he gives a cheap penalty, a non-penalty.

"In this case, VAR gives us the truth of what happened in the box."

Despite Dier giving away one penalty for a foul on Pogba and nearly a second, Mourinho declared his delight with the England international's performance at centre-back alongside Davinson Sanchez.

"I think he was fantastic, he played very well - him and Davinson," Mourinho added.

"He didn't have make one mistake, Davinson only had one in first half, where the ball went to Rashford. Dier was absolutely perfect."
