Chakalaka offers bobotie, boerwurst and chunks of antelope.
10 April 2012

African isn't the first thing that springs to mind when choosing a cuisine - but you'll be rewarded for being a bit adventurous if you pick one of these cheerful, charming restaurants on your next night out.

Chakalaka
156 Upper Richmond Road, SW15
This cheerful and loud South African restaurant gives you the opportunity to try bobotie, boerwurst and chunks of antelope. Grilled meats are the strong point here. £25 pp ex-drinks. (020 8789 5696).

Calabash
Africa Centre, WC2
The Calabash is a charming, sprawly restaurant deep within the Africa Centre. It runs on African time so the service isn't brisk but it is friendly. Dishes from all over the continent. £12pp ex-drinks. (020 7836 1976).

Angie's
381 Harrow Road, W9
This is a modernist African restaurant where the food is predominantly Nigerian - look out for pepper soup and suya - with a few West Indian dishes added to the mix. £12 pp ex-drinks. (020 8962 8761).
