Very sound veggie resto

10 April 2012

Blah Blah Blah is an old-time veggie haven, and has décor to match.

The floors, tables and chairs are wooden, there are blinds rather than curtains, and the only decorations of note are driftwood and old iron lamps.

Add wallpaper music and the echoing noise levels become formidable.

Legend has it that an old chap called Paul McCartney was overheard here asking for the music to be turned down.

The menu casts its net widely and you can expect dishes with all manner of influences, but all of them reasonably priced and generously portioned.

Among the starters might be cream of asparagus soup; plum tomato and mozzarella torte; a Greek salad; and a spicy Indian potato cake filled with curried cauliflower, carrots and peas.

Dodging over to the Windies, there may be plantain fritters made with raisins, ginger and sweet potato and served with a tomato, chilli and pineapple sauce.

Main courses are similarly eclectic.

Stir-fried noodles come with hot Thai sauce; baked tostada is put together with sweet potato gratin, refried beans and a jalapeno cream sauce; a 'Mediterranean' roulade teams baked and rolled potato layers with ricotta and roast peppers and courgettes, served with a creamy spinach sauce and deep-fried leeks; or there could be a Middle Eastern pie filled with new potato, chilli and tomatoes.

Puds are rewarding: glazed lemon tart; rhubarb and apple charlotte; roast plum crumble; and the 'wicked' chocolate pot.
