Top Fives: Chef-owned eateries
For every high profile Giorgio Locatelli or Gordon Ramsay, there are scores of less stellar chefs, beavering away in the kitchens of their own restaurants night after night, fulfilling what's often been a lifelong dream. Here are some of our favourites.
1. Providores
Despite popular misconception, Peter Gordon didn't own The Sugar Club; but, in partnership, he does own this plainly-decorated recent arrival. The only chef in town to really give fusion a good name: startling, original and extremely talented.

2. The French Table
Eric Guignard and his wife Sarah have enchanted locals with their tremendous French menu and sunny welcome. At last, there's a real reason to visit Surbiton.

3. The Parsee
Gorgeously monickered Cyrus Todiwala is, as the name suggests, a Parsee and this is where to come for an authentic taste of Parsee food. Try the dhaansaak (sic): lamb, lentils and vegetables with beautifully spiced rice.

4. Passione
A close friendship with Jamie Oliver doesn't put us off chef Gennaro Contaldo, because his restaurant is one of the best Italians in the capital. His regularlychanging menu is rarely less than a joy.

5. Armadillo
Brazilian chef Rogerio David brings a vibrant taste of South America to the East End. The short menu changes frequently and can range in flavour from Bolivia to Argentina, but it's always pretty fine and delivered with Latin Èlan.
