The Savoy to launch a children’s afternoon tea inspired by The Tiger Who Came to Tea

Time for tea: A tiger makeover
Lizzie Thomson27 September 2018

The grown-up British pastime of afternoon tea is getting an imaginative makeover this autumn.

For the first time in its 129 years on the Strand, the Savoy will launch a children’s afternoon tea on Monday October 8, inspired by the popular children's book The Tiger Who Came To Tea.

The beloved tale turns 50 this year and the food that Sophie and her mum share with their tiger guest will provide the inspiration for the hotel's new menu.

Tiger-striped scones, colourful cakes and sandwiches will all feature, paying homage to the imaginative book. Afternoon treats will be served on bespoke chinaware, also inspired by the story.

Tea time: Plates will be inspired by the book

The special tea will be on offer from Monday to Friday and will be available during the first two sittings of afternoon tea in the Thames Foyer. Adults can be rest assured that traditional afternoon tea, champagne tea and high tea will also be available.

HarperCollins Children’s Books, who published the classic, have collaborated with the top London hotel on the project.

The Tiger Who Came To Tea was written and illustrated by Judith Kerr in 1968 and has since sold more than a million copies.
