The Pope's Grotto

10 April 2012

Named after the 18th-century poet Alexander Pope who lived nearby. Poor Pope was apparently so embarassed by his unsightly hunchback appearance that he built a grotto from his house to the riverside so that he could enjoy his gardens and the river without fear of being observed. The pub is now a favourite haunt of rugby fans journeying to Twickenham and who like a pint of Young's ales before the game. It has 32 rooms starting at £65 for a single, £70 for a double or twin and £85 for rooms with a view of the Thames.
