The Delaunay: Schnitzel and sophistication at this Viennese grand café

Viennese soirees warrant fives types of würschten and you know it
Peruse the viennoiserie at The Delaunay

Under the tick of the art deco clock – labelled “Antiquité de Paris” – you’d be forgiven for thinking it had stopped for a while at The Delaunay.

Within dark panelled walls and spying more than one cloche in the vicinity, the spirit of turn-of-the-century Vienna is strong in this all-day Covent Garden eatery. Modelled after the grand cafés of Mittel Europe, The Delaunay is in the business of providing comfort for the discerning – with more than one mention of schnitzel for good measure.

The Delaunay is on hand to serve at almost any hour. Breakfast like the Viennese with a spread of smoked ham, salami, artisan gouda, boiled egg and rye bread, or peruse the profits of the Viennoiserie with a croissant au beurre or a strawberry and cream doughnut, if you’re feeling decadent. Dinner and lunch offer a wealth of Germanically monikered dishes, from four types of schnitzel to five types of würstchen, with a Hungarian goulash for wintry evenings.

Afternoon tea finds a very natural home at The Delaunay, with selections available from the Konditorei – from sachertorte to blueberry and lemon gugelhupf (a light marbled cake with a hole in the middle, to you and me), both of which go down very well with a glass or two of champagne. We’ll say prost to that.
