Long gone are the days when vegetarians struggled to find good options for Sunday roasts in London.

Thankfully, bland and uninspiring veggie dishes in the capital are few and far between in 2018, and more pubs and restaurants than ever before are serving up delicious meat-free roasts at the weekends.

From the Cafe Van Gogh to the Old Queen’s Head, here are five of the best vegan and veggie Sunday roast options in London.

The Bull & Gate

The butternut, beetroot and pumpkin seed nut roast on offer at Kentish Town’s the Bull & Gate is a fresh, seasonal take on the veggie Sunday dinner. The roast veg is always brilliantly done and while the huge Yorkshire puddings aren’t suitable for vegans, they can be swapped out by the kitchen staff for a fully vegan option too. The menu changes as the year progresses, but you can be guaranteed there’ll be great vegan and vegetarian options on offer here all 12 months of the year.

The Old Queen’s Head

This quirky Islington pub is known for the quality of its traditional Sunday roasts, but there’s also a good selection of veggie options, making it ideal for group trips where diets are mixed. The Mushroom Wellington is our top pick for meat-free diners, which is served with vegetable gravy, olive oil potatoes and tasty roast parsnips and carrots.

Cafe Van Gogh

Cafe Van Gogh

The mushroom and nut Wellington is the standout dish on Brixton restaurant Cafe Van Gogh’s Sunday menu, which is 100 per cent vegan, and delicious to boot. The not-for-profit organisation and social enterprise also supports people with learning difficulties and mental health problems, so you’ll be supporting a great cause when you’re tucking into your lunch. It’s a good option during the week too, with the brunch menu offering a hugely satisfying full vegan English for £8.95 from Tuesdays to Saturdays.

Manna

Manna

Primrose Hill’s Manna is something of a London veggie institution, holding the title of the oldest vegetarian restaurant in the UK. The kitchen has been supplying west London diners with top-quality meat-free dishes ever since 1967, and there are plenty of great Sunday dinner options to enjoy in 2018. The vegan roast might change slightly from week to week to accommodate fresh and seasonal ingredients, but it’s essentially the same dish that’s proved popular here for over ten years.

The Jones Family Kitchen

Found in the new Ecclestone Place development in Victoria, Jones Family Kitchen put on one of the best veggie roasts you’re likely to find in SE1. The nut roast is full of delicate textures and holds its own among the strong meat options also on the menu. It’s pretty affordable too, with two/three courses costing £25 on Sundays. Definitely one for veggies to seek out.

Roast

Borough Market isn’t exactly short of food options, but Roast is one of the best for veggies when it comes to Sunday dinner. The veggie menu offers a vegan nut roast with a difference, served with pickled red cabbage, rosemary roasties and onion gravy. At £22.50, it’s one of the priciest on the list, but if you feel like treating yourself at the weekend, this could be the place to do it.
