Rolled ice cream that’s made in front of you could be cool new trend

A new food stall has become the first place in London to sell rolled ice cream, which it makes from scratch in front of customers.

Snobby Whale, which has just launched in the Stables Market, is run by three Germans in their late twenties who first discovered rolled ice cream while travelling together in Thailand, where it is a popular street snack.

It is made by pouring liquid ice cream onto a metal plate cooled to -20C which instantly freezes it. A metal scraper is then used to roll the ice cream into scroll shapes. (Watch the video above to see it being made.)

Florian Reinhardt, one of the stall’s founders, said: “We really believe rolled ice cream will be the next big food trend in London. There are already several rolled ice cream parlours in New York, and a few popping-up around Europe.”

He added: “So far we have been open for a week and the weather has not been on our side at all, but this has not put people off and they have been gathering around our stall to take pictures as we make the ice cream.”

Snobby Whale is at Camden's Stables Market seven days a week and currently offers five flavours including strawberry and basil, Oreo and Nutella.

Because the ice cream is made from scratch, customers can also choose to mix and match from the flavours available. Each serving costs £5.

New York ice cream parlour 10 Below spiked interest in the rolling technique when it launched last year, and it still regularly sees hour-long queues down the road.

If there is similar demand in London then it is the concept which the team will be rolling out next, with plans to use a franchise model to expand across town.
