Best for veggies

Manna

If you or your date are vegetarian or vegan, make for Manna, one of the best places for veggie food in London. Try the organic spaghetti ‘veatballs’ (£12), or go for the fennel and pumpkin-seed sausages, cannellini bean sliders, or chipotle tofu kebabs. Finish off with raw coconut ‘vice’ cream (ice cream with liqueur).

Best for street food

The Bowler

Jez the Bowler, founder of The Bowler street-food truck and pop-up, does dozens of varieties of meatballs, including outlandish creations such as chilli chicken or chickpea and ricotta (from £6). Find him at Kerb markets and Street Feast food events, or at The Horse & Groom pub on Curtain Road, EC2, where he’s taken over the kitchen.

Best for traditional Italian

Rustico

Have a Lady and the Tramp moment with your beloved at this sweet little Italian next to Stockwell Tube. Chef Antonino Guzzo co-founded the restaurant because he felt London lacked proper Italian food. His excellent pizza and pasta are made to family recipes, including spaghetti with perfect, juicy meatballs (£8.50).
