A slice of Venetian morning culture is coming to Soho as Beak Street’s Polpo gears up to serve breakfast for the first time from May 15.

As is typical in Venice, where breakfasts are quick and inexpensive in contrast to long, leisurely lunches, these will be served to take away.

At the heart of the menu will be bite-sized sweet Venetian doughnuts known as fritole.

Polpo founder Russell Norman said: “Fritole have been an integral part of cuisine in Venice since the 14th century with the fritolèri, their vendors who littered the streets of Renaissance Venice, held in high esteem throughout the city.”

He added: “Ever since I first bit into the warm, pillowy snack, I’ve always hoped to bring them to London.”

At Polpo these fritole will be filled with ricotta and sultanas — and to celebrate the arrival of Polpo’s breakfast menu the restaurant will be giving away a free one to each of the first 100 customers through the door who purchase a coffee on launch day.

There will also be a number of sandwiches, breads, pastries and cakes on offer, including ciabatta with prosciutto cotto, emmental and tomato; sourdough with grilled cheese, red onion and thyme; field mushroom and taleggio ciabatta; and a whipped mackerel and pickled zucchini focaccia.

As of May 15 breakfast will be served each weekday from 8am until midday.
