No smoke in these bars

The Phoenix: smoke free
10 April 2012

From modern watering holes to traditional pubs, Edward Sullivan takes a look at three pubs in the capital where you can go to escape other people's fumes - before the ban arrives. Plus Charles Campion rounds-up three South American eateries.

THREE NON-SMOKING PUBS

The Pomellers Rest
196 Tower Bridge Road, SE1

This large, contemporary pub opens early in the day (9am) and attracts good crowds for the hearty breakfasts. Food is served all day and is reasonably priced, with regular promotions. Smokers must step out on to the pavement if they need a fag. (020 7378 1399)

The Phoenix
26 Throgmorton Street, EC2

This traditional establishment, close to the Bank of England, was London's first non-smoking pub when it emerged from a major refurbishment nearly two years ago. It's doing well, regularly packed out and offering an applaudable range of quality real ales. (020 7588 7289)

The Sir John Oldcastle
29-35 Farringdon Road EC1

The Wetherspoon chain has campaigned hard for a ban on smoking in public places. This is one of their first totally non-smoking pubs. Being a Wetherspoon's pub, expect cheap deals on food and drink plus a good range of quality cask ales. (020 7242 1013)

WHERE TO EAT SOUTH AMERICAN

Santa Maria del Buen Ayre
50 Broadway Market, E8

Charming (if eccentric) Argentine place (above) that's very good for grilled meat - everything from home-made black pudding to sweetbreads and steaks. Good Argentine wines. £25pp, ex-drinks. (020 7275 9900)

El Gaucho
30b Old Brompton Road, SW7

Friendly, cosy (for cosy read rather cramped) Chelsea restaurant that specialises in steaks and makes a rather good job of cooking them. Wine list leans towards the New World. £25pp, ex-drinks. (020 7584 8999)

Sabor
108 Essex Road, N1

This newcomer is making waves, offering an eclectic menu featuring Latin American favourites with a slight bias towards Colombian dishes. Friendly service. £25pp, ex-drinks. (020 7226 5551)
