Migrateful is a London cookery class run by refugees

Ailis Brennan6 February 2018

Supper clubs are great, but supper clubs with a social conscience are even better.

Migrateful is just that: a new series of events where participants don’t just taste cuisines from around the world, but are taught to cook them by asylum seekers and refugees who have migrated to London.

Chefs from countries including Syria, Iran, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Cuba work with the organisation to impart the secrets of their native cuisines to guests, while also helping them to rebuild their lives in the UK by providing voluntary work experience.

Each chef receives professional training and English tuition with Migrateful, as well as the chance to practice their language skills through the teaching of the classes.

Many cannot work or receive state benefits due to their legal position, but the sessions allow them to build on professional skills and add to their CV to help them eventually access employment. Migrateful eventually aims to provide its chefs with the means to earn a qualification.

Migrateful runs events at London restaurants, including a regular class at Rosie's Cafe in Peckham on Tuesdays and an upcoming class in Ethiopian cooking at Cafe Van Gogh on February 26. Alternatively Migrateful's chefs can hold a cookery class for up to 8 guests in your own home.

Food, friends, fun and learning new skills all round: everybody wins.
