Le Bab’s lokma

A fittingly filthy starter before a gourmet kebab. Sticky glazed dough traps a big old squirt of musky, tongue-coating chicken liver parfait. Not to be eaten before the watershed.

Brunswick House’s Ogleshield churros

It’s impossible not to inhale a dangerous number of these over a pre-dinner martini. Hot crispy cheese straws with gremolata to cut through the richness.

Curry bread. Or rather, a rabbit curry doughnut with daikon mayo. Or, says one seasoned doughnutter, a “Findus crispy pancake with rabbit katsu inside”.

Ask for Janice’s Brixham crab doughnut

Sorry Chiltern Firehouse, there’s a new crispy dough ball of flaky, salty shellfish in town. Granted, you’re less likely to meet a celeb. But this one comes with chorizo mayo — way better company, and probably less messy.

Gunpowder’s venison and vermicelli doughnut

Looks like a jumbo Scotch egg — a tad disconcerting in an Indian restaurant. But once you crunch into that delicate panko-style shell filled with rich, moist venison mince, it all makes perfect sense.
