London brunch breakdown: The Good Egg in Stoke Newington

What’s on the menu: All kinds of Middle Eastern deliciousness that the boys call a ‘Jerusalem breakfast’, which pays homage to the smorgasboard of little places you can feast on in that city, and added inspiration from Montreal and California to Tel Aviv.

Think warm challah rolls (sweet, braided bread), twists on the Bloody Mary and sharing dishes of shakshuka. Our stand-out dish was the Montreal Smoked Meat Hash: a moreish skillet of pastrami cured brisket with fried potatoes (every brunch dish should include these), onion, zhoug ( a spicy green paste) and fried eggs. Heaped onto sourdough, this dish is one we’ll keep going back for. Sweet fiends can dig into the tasty pastries and cornbread too.

Where is it: The Good Egg occupies an Instagram-friendly and bright Grade II-listed site in the centre of Stoke Newington Church Street, so you can combine brunch here with a trip to the nearby boutiques.

Who’s behind it: Joel Braham founded it along with baker Oded Mizrachi and chefs Alex Coppard and Myles Broscoe – all friends. The Good Egg started out as a street food stall touring markets all over London from KERB to Street Feast and has finally put down bricks and mortar after a successful crowdfuning campaign.
