Fast food giants KFC, Burger King and Starbucks are to reopen outlets at Welcome Break motorway service areas over the next two weeks.

The services group announced that a total of 40 food and beverage units would resume service across its 26 UK sites by June 4.

Thirty-two of the outlets have already reopened in recent days.

Motorway service areas have remained open during the coronavirus pandemic to support essential travel, but facilities have been limited.

Welcome Break said it has enhanced its hygiene and cleaning processes, and reconfigured the layout of its sites to enable social distancing.

Chief executive John Diviney said: “As the lockdown slowly eases and people around the UK gradually return to work, we are delighted to be opening up these great brands.

“It will provide a much-needed boost to those on the road and to support Britain working again.

“We very much look forward to welcoming back our returning customers.

“The health and safety of our colleagues and customers remains our absolute priority and we will continue to be guided by advice from Public Health England at all times.”

Last week, motorway services group Moto announced that 25 Burger King stores would reopen at its outlets across the UK.

On Monday, KFC said that it would aim to open 500 of its 900 UK stores by the end of this week. In the previous week, it had announced that it would trial takeaway for collection in person at 16 locations.

Fellow fast food brand McDonald’s reopened 39 drive-thru locations across the UK on Wednesday, including seven locations in London.
