Jack and Linda Mills

10 April 2012

Anyone who hasn't been to Brighton for a few years will be most impressed by the revitalisation of the beach front. A path of old railway sleepers wends its way along the shingle and the cafes, bars and restaurants bring a lively Continental feel to the place.

Where once all was kiss-me-quick hats and the smell of stale frying, there are now places to sit and drink an espresso, as well as spots to wallow in an ocean of lager.

Opposite the Old Ship Hotel there is the Brighton Fishing Museum which is a casual and relaxed sort of place. Immediately to the west of the museum in arch 197 you'll find Jack and Linda Mills, 'Traditional Fish Smokers', and across the boardwalk is a small blackened shack with impressive padlocks and wisps of smoke curling out from vents under the eaves.

There is some good beach food to be had here, as Jack and Linda sell their fresh crab-salad sandwiches (£3), a smoked mackerel-salad sandwich (£2.70), and hot smoked mackerel (£2). Very fresh, very cheap, very good.
