Have grub, will travel: roving chefs pop up in capital

Intrepid chefs aiming to launch 20 restaurants in 20 countries have ticked off country number nine in London — all with only equipment carried in their backpacks.

James Sharman and Trisha and Kevin McCrae have been on the road for more than a year after quitting their jobs and moving out of their homes.

They have so far opened monthly pop-ups in destinations including China, Kenya, India and South Africa — and even a nine-day trek up Everest.

Kevin, 34, who is married to Trisha and worked under Tom Aikens, told the Standard: “This is the first time we’ve been back in the UK in 18 months. We’re still living out of a suitcase… Our luggage is 50 per cent kitchen, 50 per cent clothes.”

In each place the chefs put their own spin on the country’s cuisine for up to 40 guests. They advertise on Facebook, often use ovens in people’s homes and say their one star gadget is an “indestructible” blender.

The One Star House Party is in Bard Road, Notting Hill, until November 3, offering an eight-course tasting menu of “greatest hits” from their travels.
