Galvin brothers hosting tarte Tatin bake-off

The Michelin-starred restaurateurs will pick the 10 best-looking creations for competition day on June 10

Michelin-starred chef brothers Chris and Jeff Galvin are inviting amateur bakers to make one of their signature dishes — tarte Tatin.

In their annual competition, which is part of London Food Month, contestants are asked to produce their own version of the apple tart at home and then upload a picture to Twitter, mentioning @Galvin_Brothers and using the #GalvinTarteTatin hashtag.

After entries close on June 3, the Galvins, who have six London restaurants and two Michelin stars between them, will pick the 10 best-looking creations. The bakers will then be invited to bring a freshly made tarte Tatin to their Baker Street restaurant Bistrot de Luxe, the first venue the Essex-born brothers opened together in 2005, on competition day — June 10. The creations will be judged by the brothers with guest critics Fred Sirieix from Channel 4’s First Dates, who is general manager of Galvin at Windows in Mayfair, and world-renowned pastry chef Claire Clark, who starred on Bake Off: Crème de la Crème.

Ollie Lloyd, founder of recipe site Great British Chefs, 2015 Junior Bake Off winner Amari Koryang, restaurant critic Richard Vines and restaurateur Gary Usher also join the line-up. Chris Galvin, who is chef patron of Bistrot de Luxe, started the competition five years ago. He said: “Jeff and I have always loved apple pies and tarte Tatin is always on our menu. It is also a great test for any chef — you give them the same ingredients and they make it in pretty much the same way, yet you get 10 different pies.”

The winner will be crowned Galvin Tarte Tatin 2017 champion, get a magnum of champagne and a £100 voucher for any Galvin restaurant. They will also get free tarte Tatin for life at Bistro de Luxe. The brothers are hosting a number of other London Food Month events including a £20 set two-course lunch at both Bistrot de Luxe and Galvin La Chapelle, where Jeff is chef patron.
