Fresh fish and wet fish

10 April 2012

There's something spooky about this part of Chiswick - the last few years have seen it turn from middle-class respectable to restaurant gulch.

Fishworks is the London end of a chainlet that links branches in Bath, Bristol and Christchurch, and the vibe is right.

Inside is a pretty, modern dining room with a gardeny bit at the rear.

Service is friendly and attentive, the wine list is interesting and not too rapacious; all in all, a very satisfying place.

There's a longish menu and a very long list of specials on a blackboard.

From the starters, perhaps the roast shellfish with garlic and olive oil appeals.

Or there may be fresh Dartmouth crab salad with tarragon mayonnaise.

Or how about steamed River Fowey mussels with wine and parsley? Or grilled tuna? Alternatively, try the 'skate with black butter and capers'.

There is a serious fruits de mer.

And there are 'whole fish - for the table', such as a wild sea bass for two.

Vegetables are simple and good; a dish of buttered spinach leaves is outstanding.

The bread is good.

This is a comfortable place where the fish are both skilfully chosen and skilfully cooked.

The wine list is eclectic and there are some interesting bottles at accessible prices.

Start with half a bottle of cold Manzanilla San Leon, and look out for the unusual Pazo Ribeiro, from Galicia - dry, white and zingy.

Note - the fishmonger's counter is open 08.30-22.30.
