Five things David Sexton ate this week

Our restaurant critic tries out a few Nigel Slater recipes and stocks up on satsumas in Green Lanes
25 September 2013

1. I have been studying hard Nigel Slater’s latest, Eat: The Little Book of Fast Food. Spatchcocked chicken, rocket and couscous is yum: “No flavours go to waste”, as he says.

2. On the other hand, perhaps I was just too well for Nigel’s “late-night sardine supper”, chucking together a can of beans, a tin of sardines and a dash of red wine vinegar, which he claims to be “worth a thought when you’re hungry and perhaps a little the worse for wear”.

3. Sushi and donburi at the understandably always packed Dotori in Finsbury Park: like a cheaper, non-corporate, more charming mini-Wagamama.

4. Plenty of refreshing new-season satsumas, pictured, £1.89 a kilo from Yasar Halim, 495 Green Lanes, N4 (or, if you prefer, £4.15 a kilo from M&S).

5. Partridges and bacon, simply roasted, from the excellent butcher Baldwins, 469 Green Lanes, which, in this otherwise pretty much halal zone, heroically boasts a sticker on its door saying: “Pork — go on, give it a try! It’s tasty!”
