A new poll has seen Five Guys crowned America’s favourite burger, beating In-N-Out for the first time.

The Virginia-born chain topped the rankings in the influential Harris Poll, which asks people to rate burger restaurants based on familiarity, quality and how likely they are to consider purchasing their items.

Previous winner In-N-Out was pushed to two, which proved controversial on social media, while Shake Shack occupied the third slot.

The results mean that the only burger in the poll’s top three which remains elusive to Londoners is In-N-Out.

The city is now home to a whopping fifteen branches of Five Guys, with a new Piccadilly site on the horizon, and six Shake Shack shops.

The success of Five Guys in the survey has partly been put down to its rapid growth over the last few years, to the point that there are now well over 1000 branches in the US and many more abroad.

However, it is not all about familiarity. Burger juggernaut McDonald's could only make it to number seven in the rankings, behind smaller operators including Wendy’s at four and Culver's at five.
