Tenerife: papas arugadas served with garlicky mojo

1. Black rice with squid, prawns and alioli at Iberica Marylebone with my son Ben, who asked our tetchy waiter “Do you enjoy your job?” “Yes, I have a degree in hospitality,” he crossly replied.

2. Best item in the “vegetarian” (including eggs) breakfast at Comptoir Libanais Gatwick North Terminal was ful medames thrumming with cumin.

3. A plate of fried fish that looked as if extracted from a tropical tank at the restaurant La Caseta in Punta del Hidalgo, north Tenerife.

4. The best thing eaten in Tenerife, papas arugadas (wrinkled potatoes), pictured, crystallised with salt and served with a garlicky mojo, verdant with coriander.

5. Red pepper and feta dip with crackers on an easyJet lunchtime flight where, despite full colour adverts of more substantial food (such as sandwiches) in the airline’s publication, Bistro & Boutique, it had all run out by Row 14.
