Comfortable neighbourhood gastropub

10 April 2012

It doesn't seem very long ago when this place was a lager and football hovel.

Then it reverted to its original name, the Ealing Park Tavern, and settled into a new role as a tidy pub serving rather good food.

It should be no surprise, as the owners are the people behind another fine gastropub, St John's (see p. 261).

The Tavern is a handsome place and, like its North London sibling, is founded on the simple premise that hospitality is important.

The bar has two or three decent real ales and the wine list is short, but gives a fair choice at accessible prices.

The dining room has a tall counter separating it from an open kitchen and the menu is chalked up on a blackboard.

The menu is a short one, but it is thoughtfully written, changes daily and there is something for everybody.

Starters may include a spiced parsnip soup; spaghetti vongole; fishcakes with chive crème fraÎche; or a hearty country terrine - all sound stuff.

Main courses are well presented, substantial and seem pretty good value.

There may be fish pie; braised lamb shank with a tomato and white bean stew; or slow roast Gloucester Old Spot pork belly with apple sauce.

Fish dishes tend to be a good option: how does a whole lemon sole with new potatoes and Hollandaise sauce sound? Puds are comforting and comfortable - orange crème brélée; treacle tart with clotted cream; chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream.
