Christopher’s: American classics in grand surroundings

Power lunching to late night martinis Christopher’s proves a reliable return

Covent Garden’s upmarket American restaurant Christopher’s is partly famous as the site where the Tories drowned their losses in 1997, but has held onto its enviable site for the best part of three decades by plating up smart American dishes in plush surroundings.

Come for the likes of USDA prime steak (or Scottish sirloin, if you’ve got taste), lobster thermidor, surf n’ turf and too many martinis. It’s the sort of place that’s seen Prime Minister’s power lunch and had business execs battle it out over pricey bottles of Margaux. Christopher’s doesn’t seem to get much press these days, but it deserves to: after its refurbishment a few years ago, it’s a grand place to go and while the food mightn’t be pushing any boundaries, it doesn’t need to: it is solidly delicious.
