Caught on CAMRA at beer fest

10 April 2012

It's August, it's bound to be hot, and there's nothing we like better at this time of year than a nice pint of cold beer.

It must be time, then, to don our sweaty shirts and artificial beer guts and head for the over-sized greenhouse that is Olympia and the Great British Beer Festival (Tue 6-Sat 10 Aug). An air-conditioning system inside the building should cool things down enough for the thousands of 'ale anoraks' from around the country to band together and choose from more than 400 British ales, ciders, perries and an international collection of beers from around the world.

It is quite rightly described by CAMRA (The Campaign For Real Ale, who organise this event) as 'The biggest pub in the world', and few who have attended in the past would doubt this claim.

And although this pub's clientele might predominately conform to the unkempt stereotype of the ale aficionado, each year - happily - seems to boast an increasing number of 'normal' office boys and girls popping in for a session after work.

It's best to go earlier in the week in order to enjoy the greatest choice of ales on tap - particularly the prize-winners - as supplies often start to run dry by the weekend.

The Great British Beer Festival, Tue 6 Aug, 5.30pm-10.30pm (£6), Wed 7 Aug, 11.30am-3pm (£2) & 5pm-10.30pm (£6), Thur 8 & Fri 9 Aug, noon-10.30pm (£6), Sat 10 Aug, 11am-7pm (£5), Olympia, Hammersmith Road, W14. (0172 786 7201). www.camra.co.uk.
