Braveheart - the restaurant

10 April 2012

Ranald Macdonald, who is next in line to be the Chief of Clanranald, owns Boisdale, and if that information gives you a premonition of what the restaurant is like you are probably thinking along the right lines.

This is a very Scottish place, strong on hospitality, and with a befuddlingly large range of rare malt whiskies.

Fresh produce - correction, fresh Scottish produce - rules wherever possible, and it is no wonder that the clubby atmosphere makes this a haven of choice for local businessmen.

There are various Boisdale menus: one is a two-course menu with choice of five starters and five mains.

Or there's the 'Flying Scotsman', a limited choice lunch presumably for people in a rush.

Starters range from marinated Orkney herring and mini roast Macsween haggis, to dill-marinated Scottish salmon.

Main courses veer from crofter's pie, to smoked haddock fishcakes, to - you've guessed it - roast Macsween haggis.

The à la carte includes a good many luxury ingredients.

As well as Lochcarnan smoked salmon from South Uist, and Rannoch Moor smoked venison with black truffle dressing, there's a rabbit, pigeon and foie gras terrine with pear chutney.

Commendably, the mains feature fresh fish of the day, and fresh offal of the day.

There are various Aberdeen Angus beef steaks: fillet with Béarnaise sauce and chips, or rib-eye with black truffle, pommes Dauphinoise, spinach and wild mushrooms.

Puds also favour north of the border - look out for raspberry cranachan made with oatmeal and cream.
