Wembley's transformation into a fashionable shopping and residential hotspot is continuing with a major new addition — hipster hangout Boxpark.

The food and drink complex, which also has sites in Shoreditch and Croydon, will be on Olympic Way, metres from the sports stadium.

It will take inspiration from its predecessors, with their trademark “shipping container aesthetic”, but will be the first to have a roof.

Roger Wade, Boxpark’s founder and chief executive, said the Wembley site would have 29 units for food and drink vendors. Brands at the other Boxparks include pizza joint Voodoo Rays, burger bar MEATLiquor and cult brunch venue The Breakfast Club.

At Wembley there will also be a large “cultural hub”, with a capacity of 2,000, and a smaller venue for 300 people, both of which can be used for events and community workshops.

Mr Wade, who launched Boxpark Shoreditch in 2010 and the Croydon version last year, is also keen to establish a relationship with Wembley Stadium to launch a fan zone with merchandise for sports fans.

He said: “Well, why not Wembley? There is not one person in the world who hasn’t heard of Wembley. Wembley is changing and it is changing significantly. It doesn’t matter, hipster or not, people want good food, drink and entertainment. Wembley is very different to Shoreditch, but is more similar to Croydon.

“When we went to Croydon, it was under-served with food and drink offerings. We feel the same about Wembley. It has been neglected over the years and that is why we feel it is the right area for us to come in an transform. Wembley is emerging as a cool area.”

The Boxpark will be part of the ongoing development of Wembley Park, a 85-acre site that includes the arena and the stadium, which is being masterminded by Quintain. Wembley Park also includes the London Designer Outlet shopping centre.

Developer Quintain has invested more than £1 billion in the area since 2002, and is set to pour in another £2 billion by 2020. Its chief executive, Angus Dodd, said: “Boxpark Wembley will open up Wembley Park to a whole new audience and we are looking forward to welcoming them, along with those that live and work here already.”
