An African afternoon tea is coming to London

Nigerian pies and Ghanaian cacao will feature at this first-of-its-kind tea
International flavours: An African afternoon tea is coming to London

The quintessentially English notion of afternoon tea has seen many twists over the years — from a Gentleman’s version served with whisky to an Asian alternative featuring dim sum.

Now Lerato London, run by Nigerian-born Lerato Umah-Shaylor, is launching London’s first African afternoon tea, to be held next month in Clerkenwell.

Described as a “marriage of the vibrancy of Africa with traditional English decorum”, the tea will feature akara tarts, based on West African bean fritters; prawn suya rolls, which are an African version of summer rolls; and a Lagos Angus pie, a nod to the meat pies which are a staple in every home in Nigeria.

Honey butter rolls served with strawberry and tomato jam are an African interpretation of the great British scone, while other sweets will include plantain and raspberry ‘chocolate bark’ made with Ghanaian cacao, and a ‘chin chin’ mango mousse made using a favourite West African recipe for sweet cookie dough.

All this will be accompanied by a range of loose leaf African teas, a homemade zobo lemonade made with hibiscus flowers, and a glass of Champagne on arrival.

The tea will take place on September 11 at Printworks Kitchen on Rosebery Avenue. There are sittings at 1pm and 3pm. Tickets cost £37 and are available here.
