Franklins uses fine British produce and is particularly strong on game. The no-nonsense kitchen turns out simple, top-drawer food at a good price. I love this place, there's something really provincial French about the combination of great food and relaxed attitude.

Le Chardon is small, busy and smoky. The menu is ostensibly French (they also serve Thai fish cakes). It's housed in an old butcher's that feels nicely posh with its original Art Deco touches. Pretty garden, too.

Monica Ali, the half-Bangladeshi author of Brick Lane, thinks this is the best curry house in town. As good a recommendation as any, don't you think?
