It's the stuff of theatre dreams, Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart joining forces to take on that other theatre legend's, Harold Pinter's, No Man's Land - the absurdist tale of Hirst and Spooner, and a their night of twilight hour drinking.

Starting off in Sheffield in August, the pair will travel with the show to Newcastle, Brighton and Cardiff, before arriving at the West End's Wyndham's Theatre for a 14-week run in September.

Whilst news of the production is talk of Theatreland, the pair have in fact appeared onstage together many times before, specifically in Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot in 2009. The show even enjoyed a revival in 2013, when it was, incidentally, paired with Pinter's No Man's Land.

Speaking to The Guardian Stewart revealed he saw the original production at the Wyndham back in 1975, when it starred Ralph Richardson and John Gielgud. In fact, he went to see it twice in one week, and "would have seen it more if I could have afforded the tickets," he said.

"I made a promise to myself that one day I would play Spooner or Hirst," he continued, "but to be doing it back at Wyndham’s with Ian McKellen was a fantasy I never entertained."

Stewart will take on the alcoholic intellect Hirst, whilst McKellen returns to the role of failed poet Spooner, and the pair will perform under the direction of Sean Mathias.

Of the reunion, McKellen has said in a statement: "Playing Spooner to Patrick’s Hirst on Broadway was a constant joy, which is why I am delighted to be back with him in the West End."

Tickets will be offered at multiplex prices, with more than 100 seats at between £10 and £20.

We're certain they won't hang around...
