London's Shakespeare 400 festival pays tribute to our greatest writer on the 400th anniversary of his death. Over the course of this weekend you can go all latter-day Falstaff: living it large on lardy cake, Tempest cocktails and bawdy shows. Or, if the scholarly Horatio is more your style, there are more lectures to attend than are generally dreamt of in even the most ardent student’s philosophy. Above our pick of the best of Shakespeare 400.

Shakespeare was just 52 when he died, and died around a month after signing his will, in which he opened by describing himself as being "in perfect health".

There is no record of his death, and it is generally assumed to be April 23 as his funeral was April 25. The cause of his death remains unknown, although in AL Rowse's 1963 biography of the great playwright, it's noted that half a century later, the vicar of Stratford, John Ward, wrote in his notebook: "Shakespeare, Drayton and Ben Jonson had a merry meeting and, it seems, drank too hard, for Shakespeare died of a fever there contracted".
