Anyone can cook Asian cuisine — face your fears, says chef Jeremy Pang

The Chinese chef says too many people think “you have to be Asian to cook Asian”

Chef Jeremy Pang has urged “nervous” Londoners to overcome their fears of cooking Asian cuisine at home.

The 34-year-old founder of the School of Wok teaching kitchen in Covent Garden said too many people are scared about tackling his cuisine at home and think “you have to be Asian to cook Asian”.

Pang, based in Southfields, added that many students who come to his cookery school own equipment such as woks but use them to make spaghetti bolognaise rather than rustling up something authentic.

The entrepreneur, whose family has three generations of chefs, said: “Everyone can cook Asian cuisine, you do not have to be Asian. There is a bit of a cultural barrier … people are still a bit nervous … it’s not so much about making the techniques simpler, but making the explanation of those techniques simpler.”

School of Wok, set up in 2009, runs classes in all Asian cuisines. Speaking as he launched one of the UK’s first make-at-home bao bun kits, Pang added: “Asian food is easy to cook once you know how.”

The packs, which the chef said were a great way of “building confidence”, cost £3.49 each and are available in 300 Tesco stores across the country.
