Which biscuit is the best for dunking in tea?

Experiment reveals the most durable dunkers

We shine the spotlight on the humble cuppa and its equally famous companion: the much-loved biscuit.

One technicality that can quite literally make or break the perfect brew is: how well does your chosen biscuit dunk?

In this video, researchers on behalf of Wren Kitchens have conducted an experiment that puts the nation’s favourite biscuits to the test, to discover how long each of them can last before crumbling under the pressure.

With a focus on the classic, most well-known varieties of biscuits, we can reveal that the number one biscuit for dunking is the mighty Bourbon.

Champion: Bourbon biscuits

With a recommended dunking time of seven seconds, the Bourbon’s breaking point actually goes way beyond that at a whopping two minutes and 39 seconds.

Its super strength could well come from its small holes that allow steam to escape during manufacture, which prevents them from breaking or cracking.

"If the holes weren't there, steam would build up inside the biscuits. The biscuits would collapse back down," Mark Greenwell, McVitie's team manager at the company's factory in Carlisle, told Channel 4's Food Unwrapped.

Runners up are shortbread, Jammie Dodger, custard cream and Rich Tea.
