If you’re the type of person that can only stomach half of an avocado on your toast in the morning, you might want to head down to your local M&S, which has just launched the high street’s first miniature avocados.

The baby fruit is half the size of a normal avocado, weighing just 60 grams, and joins a family of other miniature fruits already on sale at the retailer including figs, bananas and kiwis.

The avocados, which cost £2 for a pack of 5, are grown just outside Malaga, Spain and were once rejected in the orchard for being too small. However, M&S says that the flavour is more concentrated in the smaller avocados, giving them a rich, sweet and creamy taste.

The new launch comes as it’s announced that sales of avocados are up 18 per cent on the year at M&S, which sold more than 11.5 million last year alone.

The food giant hopes that the mini avocados will help those who want to limit their calorie intake, considering the average-sized avocado contains around 160.

Sally Sharp, M&S produce expert, says: “We’re excited to add the mini avocado to our ever-growing collection of baby fruits. Its smaller size makes it ever tastier than a normal avocado with a deliciously creamy texture. They are great for snacking or adding to salads as they can simply be cut in half rather than sliced.”

Sally continues: “Experts advise a serving of half an avocado a day so these minis offer the ideal portion size without leaving half the fruit exposed to the air which can quickly go brown.”

Avocados have become somewhat of a breakfast staple in the UK and can be found on the menus of many brunch restaurants from restaurant chain Leon and the hugely popular Breakfast Club to high end London eateries such as Berners Tavern and Duck and Waffle.

Once an ingredient reserved for Mexican cooking, celebrity chefs such as Nigella Lawson and Jamie Oliver have helped championed avocado as an ingredient. So it should come as no surprise that Instagram reported that it was one of the most popular foodstuffs shared last year.

One thing is for certain: you’ll be seeing a lot more of mini avocados on the app in the near future.
