Hot drink: Hada del cafe's medium roast coffee

Marsha Dunstan25 July 2012

What: Pure Arabica medium roast coffee, ground for filter.

Where from: From £6.25 per 250g foil sachet, from Harvey Nichols or John Lewis Food Hall, (hadadelcafe.com/the-coffee)

Taste assessment: The light, bright aroma immediately signalled something different from my regular high-octane breakfast mug. But this medium is stronger than it smells and turned out to be closer in taste to a high roast than most supermarket mediums. Its smooth, complex taste has a hint of chocolate and is way too interesting to gulp. Made with a filter, it is clear – no muddy cafetière residue; good black but holds its own with milk. It seems expensive until you think about how many dreary takeaway cups you’d get for the same price. And Martina Gruppo's (aka the Coffee Fairy) back story is heart-warming: as a volunteer teacher in Nicaragua, she started a grassroots coffee business and developed the idea back in Britain. It’s still very personal: for months her online store had a “shop closed” sign up because: ”I am in Nicaragua sourcing coffee…”. I'm glad she's returned.
