Chef's table: Stevie Parle, head chef of the Dock Kitchen in Notting Hill

5 November 2012

Stevie Parle, head chef of the Dock Kitchen in Notting Hill, tells us where he likes to eat out in London

Where would you pay to eat out? “I love to go to Koya (49 Frith Street, W1D; koya.co.uk). And I go almost every day to a café in Hackney called Railroad (120 Morning Lane, E9; railroadhackney.co.uk) which is owned by my sister. I do have breakfast there every single day.”

Why? “Koya is brilliant. I find it immensely relaxing as soon as I walk in. It’s very beautiful, very calm.

Railroad it’s very friendly, it’s nice and small. It’s close to my house. It’s really, really lovely.”

What do you eat there? “I think the food [at Koya] is particularly appealing to chefs because it’s so clean and simple. It’s almost an antidote to a hot busy kitchen. It’s also cheap. I either have the pork and miso udon or whatever is on the specials board with a bowl of rice.

At Railroad they make delicious Moroccan baked eggs or the best bacon sandwich in London. Or I really love the coffee. They also serve lunch and also dinner Wednesday to Saturday so I not infrequently have breakfast, lunch and dinner. That’s not very often but it has been known!”

Who would you take? “You can go on your own definitely.”

Spice Trip by Stevie Parle and Emma Grazette is published on October 25 (Square Peg, £20); the TV series, Spice Trip can be seen on More4 from mid-November
