BarChick: Mahogany Bar at Wilton's Music Hall

Old-school charm: The Mahogany Bar
22 March 2012

Take: Music-loving friends or dates to one of London’s hidden bars. It’s only open Monday to Friday from 5pm-11pm and when there is a show on Saturday or Sunday (wiltons.org.uk).

Vibe: It’s like a members’ bar minus the pretension in this Grade II-listed building. Relax on an old leather sofa and take in the beautiful old bar — the original one was possibly the first to be made of mahogany in London, though it has long since gone.

The words: The “Wilton’s” sign is lit up by light bulbs, Hollywood style, and even if you’re not here for a show, take a peep at one of the few surviving Victorian music halls in the world, it’s pretty breathtaking.

Best drinks: The bar keeps it simple with red, white and rosé wines, beers and ciders. After 6pm drinks are served in plastic cups — no one likes smashed glasses in the music hall. Plus if you’r e peckish you can order in from one of the many takeaway menus.

Cash or credit card: We say cash. On Mondays for £6 you can also have a tour of the building. Bargain.
