Two become one at The Globe

John Keats' birth place? The Globe
10 April 2012

Originally, this was two pubs, one known as the Globe, and one known as the John Keats. Now just called "The Globe", the John Keats is now relegated to bar status, though it has an upstairs that appears to be largely ignored - and it's obvious from the strange connections between the two pubs upstairs that they weren't the same building at all originally.

There is some speculation that John Keats was actually born here in 1795, in a pub known at the time as the Swan and Hoop, but the sources are somewhat vague. He was born in what was then Moorfields, but the exact placement of the pub isn't clear. Sadly, neither pub appears to be that old, with modernised Victorian interiors in both.

Owned by Nicholson's, there is a good range of well-kept beer on tap and the food is pretty good, too, if unpretentious. It can get crowded at the usual lunch and commuting times (though try the upstairs bar at the Keats if you're trying to get away from it all). It's an easy pub to find, and does manage to provide a good experience, amidst the crowds.
