Truman's to move into huge new Walthamstow brewery with tap room, street food market and more

Historic east London brewer Truman’s is to open a huge new brewery in Walthamstow.

The new site, which is set to open in spring 2020, will host a tap room, street food market, live music performance space and artist studios.

Tours will also run around the brewery, with a brewing school offering visitors the chance to learn the art of making beer.

It will mark a major expansion for the revived brand, which opened its current Hackney Wick brewery back in 2013, almost a quarter of a century after it first went out of business.

Truman’s first began brewing in the Brick Lane area in 1666 — when the firm was known as the Black Eagle Brewery — and by the end of the 19th century had become the largest brewer in world history.

It remained a powerhouse of the British brewing scene for much of the 20th century, but was forced to shut in 1989 after sustained financial woes.

In 2010, Truman’s was relaunched and is now expanding to its new E17 site, which will cover 50,000 sq ft and have a production capacity of 25 million litres. The Hackney Wick brewery will close as part of the move.

James Morgan, CEO of Truman’s, said: “Having maxed out capacity at our current home in Hackney Wick, [our new brewery] gives us a springboard to grow for many years to come whilst flying the flag for east London brewing.”
